In his role as a licensed tour guide by the city of Charleston, SC, Mark drives carriages for Palmetto Carriage Works, one of the largest carriage operators in America. With Rebel Sinclair, Mark is also the co-owner of Black Cat Tours, a Charleston-based walking tour company which specializes in covering the OTHER side of Charleston history - ghosts, murders, prostitution, paranormal investigations, wayward minsters, political corruption, and other wicked history. Mark has given more than 10,000 tours.
In addition to his duties as a writer, researcher and tour guide, Mark is also a public speaker. He has entertained corporate clients, school and church groups and civic organizations on a wide variety of related subjects. Mark's Wicked Charleston Power Point presentation is funny, ribald, controversial, but always wickedly entertaining. Sure to upset S.O.B.s everywhere! He also delves into slave uprisings, religious history, serial killers, Charleston high (and low) society and prohibition.
In his tours, his books and his public speeches, Mark presents Charleston as it is, and has been - a fascinating city with a vibrant history that ranks as one of the most important in American history.
Mark's current writing projects include:
* TARHEEL TERROR: A collection of darkly sinister tales of murder in North Carolina. (Scheduled completion 2009) * DOIN' THE CHARLESTON: The history of the Jenkins Orphanage Band and their role in the development of jazz music, including the most famous dance in American history - the Charleston. (Scheduled completion 2010)
